Vision Inspection

Vision Inspection

Image quality determines inspection accuracy. When products vibrate, shift position, or move at inconsistent speeds, cameras capture blurry or misaligned images. Inspection systems compensate with slower cycle times, wider tolerances, or increased false rejects.

Conveyor selection directly affects inspection performance. Belt texture appears in images. Vibration from worn bearings or imbalanced pulleys blurs edges. Speed variation shifts products between trigger and capture.

Conveyor Technologies builds low profile conveyors specifically for vision inspection applications. Precision-machined pulleys and sealed bearings minimize vibration. Flat belt surfaces provide clean backgrounds. Backlit configurations enable silhouette inspection and edge detection.

For over 40 years, we have manufactured precision conveyors in Milford, Ohio. Engineering support is provided directly by our technical team. All conveyor frames are backed by a 10-year warranty.

Speed Synchronization

Vision systems require products to remain stable during image capture. Movement during exposure creates blur. Vibration transmitted through the conveyor frame appears as edge distortion in images.

Sealed, maintenance-free bearings eliminate the play that develops in standard bearings over time. Precision-machined pulleys run true without the wobble that creates cyclic vibration. These components maintain image quality throughout the service life of the conveyor rather than degrading as wear accumulates.

Flat belt surfaces provide uniform backgrounds for top-down camera views. Belt tracking remains consistent without the lateral drift that shifts products between lanes or out of the camera field of view.

The result is stable product presentation that enables faster inspection cycles and tighter quality tolerances. False reject rates decrease when products appear consistently in images.

Silhouette inspection, edge detection, and dimensional measurement applications require illumination from below the product. Backlit conveyors integrate light sources and translucent belt materials to create uniform illumination across the inspection zone.

The AccuVision Internal Backlit Conveyor positions high-intensity LED arrays beneath a translucent belt surface. Light passes through the belt to silhouette products for cameras mounted above. This configuration eliminates shadows and provides consistent contrast for edge detection algorithms.

Uniform illumination across the belt width prevents brightness variation that affects measurement accuracy. LED lighting maintains consistent output without the warm-up drift or replacement cycles associated with fluorescent sources.

For applications requiring both backlit and standard top-lit inspection, conveyor systems can incorporate multiple inspection zones with different lighting configurations.

Vision enclosures and camera mounting structures limit vertical clearance above production lines. Standard conveyors often exceed available space, forcing compromises in camera positioning or enclosure design.

Low profile conveyors fit beneath vision systems where taller conveyors cannot. The compact frame height positions products closer to cameras, improving resolution without requiring longer focal length lenses. Shorter working distances also reduce sensitivity to vibration and ambient light interference.

Conveyor mounting aligns with vision system frames using standard hardware patterns. Belt edges provide consistent reference points for camera calibration. Drive placement options (end-drive, center-drive) accommodate enclosure configurations and cable routing requirements.

For multi-camera inspection stations, conveyor length and speed synchronize product presentation across sequential inspection points.

Inspection timing depends on predictable product arrival. When conveyor speed varies, products arrive early or late relative to camera triggers. Systems compensate by widening trigger windows, which reduces throughput.

Variable speed drives match conveyor speed to upstream and downstream equipment. Products maintain consistent spacing through the inspection zone without bunching or gaps that disrupt trigger timing.

Encoder feedback provides position data for camera synchronization. Rather than triggering on fixed time intervals, cameras capture images based on actual belt position. This eliminates timing errors from speed variation and enables inspection at higher throughput rates.

Integration with inspection system controllers uses standard interfaces for trigger signals, speed commands, and fault communication. Conveyor motion coordinates with reject mechanisms to remove defective products at consistent positions downstream of the inspection point.
